Dortmund's two-point cushion
Dortmund leapfrogged Bayern at the top following victory over Wolfsburg on Matchday 27 of the Bundesliga season. Die Schwarzgelben left it late, with Paco Alcacer’s 90th minute brace sealing all three points for Lucien Favre’s men. Freiburg proved once again to be a thorn in Niko Kovac’s side, as Der FCB laboured to a 1-1 draw. Elsewhere, Werder made it 10 games unbeaten and moved into a European qualification place courtesy of a convincing win at home to Mainz. Mönchengladbach’s slump continued at the hands of Düsseldorf, a result which saw Frankfurt move back into the top four.
Landmark for women in football
In terms of women occupying key roles in men’s football, Germany is streets ahead of England. Whereas a woman has never taken charge of a Premier League game, Bibiana Steinhaus is now a regular Bundesliga referee, after officiating her first game in the German top flight in September 2017. On Sunday, a new landmark was reached with the announcement of Inka Grings as the new head coach of fourth-division outfit SV Straelen. The second-highest goalscorer in Frauen-Bundesliga history will become the first-ever female head coach in the top four tiers of German football.
Bahrain Grand PrixÂ
Meanwhile in the world of F1 racing, there was disappointment for the German drivers in Bahrain. Sebastian Vettel spun off (listen here) whilst trying to prevent himself from being overtaken by the race's eventual winner, Lewis Hamilton. He made his way back up to fifth place, but a front wing failure hindered any further progression. Nico Hulkenberg did not finish the race, despite having worked his way up the field to sixth place – an engine fault forced him to pull out with two laps to go.
