Gerd Müller’s incredible record of 40 goals stood for a remarkable 49 years, but it was broken by the one and only Robert Lewandowski when he netted his 41st and final goal of an incredible campaign for the Polish striker.

Bayern Munich had already secured the title, but departing manager Hansi Flick named a strong team in the season finale against Augsburg. This included a start for the Austrian David Alaba, whose contract ends this summer.
An own goal, followed by strikes from Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman gave Bayern a 4-0 lead at the break. Augsburg grabbed a couple back in the second half, and with the result of a foregone conclusion, Lewandowski reacted first to Leroy Sane’s rebounded shot, rounding the keeper to score in the 90th minute. A world-class campaign from a world-class player.
At the other end of the table, the second relegated team was still be confirmed. Armina were away at Stuttgart whilst Köln were at home to Schalke. Meanwhile, Werder Bremen hosted Borussia Mönchengladbach, with all three in danger of going down. An 86th minute goal from centre-back Seb Bornauw was enough to earn Köln a vital three points, whilst Armina netted twice in the second half to beat Stuttgart 2-0.
Unfortunately, Werder Bremen were not able to show the same fight as their relegation rivals. Two consolation goals came far too late, as BMG scored four goals by the 67th minute leaving Werder relying on other results, results that did not go their way. They will join Schalke in 2. Bundesliga and Köln will compete in the relegation play-off.
Elsewhere
Erling Haaland scored twice in a 3-1 for Borussia Dortmund against Bayer Leverkusen, securing third place as BVB ended the season on a high. Second-placed Leipzig, however, did not, as their DFB-Pokal defeat last week was followed by a draw with Wolfsburg and a final day loss to Union Berlin.
Wolfsburg themselves lost 3-2 to Mainz, whilst Eintracht Frankfurt beat Freiburg 3-1. Finally, Hoffenheim beat Hertha Berlin, who secured their safety in the previous week.
