Whilst the rest of the world continues to be crazy and unpredictable, Germany’s top league has a recognisable air of normality, with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig once more leading from the front after five game-weeks. Hansi Flick’s side have been at their imperious best this week after a small stutter at the start of the season, perhaps suffering a slight hangover from their delayed European success in the summer. But a convincing midweek 4-0 win over a usually stubborn Atletico Madrid was followed up by a 5-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, in which Robert Lewandowski bagged a hat-trick.
Kingsley Coman was the main man on Wednesday in Bayern’s win over their Spanish visitors. The Frenchman opened the scoring in the first half, before finishing off the rout in the 72nd minute. Midfielders Corentin Tolisso and the ever-impressive Leon Goretzka joined Coman on the scoresheet in what was a statement Champions League win for the Bavarian side, determined to defend their European crown. Their dominance in Germany looks set to continue as well, and Polish striker Lewandowski was at his goal scoring best at the Allianz Arena. His three goals take his tally to 8 for the season already, but the pick of the five was scored by Leroy Sane. The former Man City winger cut in from the right before curling in an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.
RB Leipzig are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga with 4 wins and a draw so far, including a gritty 2-1 win over Hertha Berlin this week. The side from the capital played 45 minutes with 10 men after substitute right-back Deyovaisio Zeefuik was dismissed after two yellow cards in just 5 minutes and could not hold on for a point as Marcel Sabitzer converted a 77th minute penalty.
Borussia Dortmund enjoyed a routine victory over a hapless Schalke, dominating possession and scoring three goals in the process. Jadon Sancho was back in the starting XI after time on the sideline, and it was no surprise to see Erling Haaland on the scoresheet too. Elsewhere Borussia Mönchengladbach beat basement boys Mainz after a late comeback, whilst Stuttgart drew with Köln, and there was nothing to separate Union Berlin and Freiburg.
