Weekly update: German climate protections hindering compliance with the Paris agreement

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

Climate change

German climate protections have been disappearing and hindering the country's compliance with the Paris climate agreement.

The cause has been an influential group of lobbyists thwarting laws which, for example, would include ending combustion car production and setting the date to stop coal-powered electricity production earlier than the current deadline of 2038.

Environment

The city of Bitterfeld used to be the dirtiest city in both the GDR (East Germany) and Europe but it is now considered an ecological success following its environmental renovation.

Wildlife such as wild boar, deer and herons can now be found throughout the city. This process of renovation is still ongoing which demonstrates the amount of time and money required to solve the environmental damage that took place in the GDR.
